Of course you are not bringing an axe, you have a log and will be making a training axe on site to chop trees with, just need to dig some stone. You only get to the point of having a personal preference strong enough to set it in proverbial stone once you hit the point of not thinking about the simple stuff. Basically most people will either be doing play now or making a custom run of it. This is mostly because to want to make a profile means your willing to dig into how the format works and then will be using it a great many times. I have noticed (in myself and by a few people who talked about it) that when you get to the point of writing your own profiles you probably fall into that last category where you know a lot of stuff without realizing it (such as knowing your not including an anvil and will have to buy one). Basically it falls under the 4 stages of competence where your either unconsciously incompetent, consciously incompetent, consciously competent, or unconsciously competent. Just going to point out one of the reasons why there are not profiles that are good for new players is that once you get into making profiles you have probably advanced far enough in your knowledge to have lost sight of just exactly what new players need. Then open embark_profiles.txt in Dwarf Fortress' /data/init folder, open it with a text editor, and copy your new profile (it should be at the bottom,) and post it at When you click submit, you'll get a link, like: " ", which you can then submit here, at least! (Note: I have no influence on the Starter Pack.) I want to play your profiles! Failing that, if we can hash out a good beginner's profile here, I'll put it on pastebin and offer it up as smileware.īut really, people, write up some profiles and submit them for the pack! All you have to do is set up your skills and equipment, press 's,' and name it, and it'll get written to your list of embark profiles. Now, for me the best solution is for someone else to write up a great beginner's embark profile. Heck, I don't start with any mining skill at all, and no picks (there's plenty of fuel and ore in the profile, of course.) I may not be the best one to do this. In comments here and Bay12, I read about 2 miner starts, and three miner starts. I do mostly mountainous embarks with a tile of trees somewhere at the bottom of a cliff, so starting dwarven hunters, herbalists, fisherdwarves(!?) etc., don't leap to mind as being especially useful. I made it in a rush, because clearly some people would want such a thing, and the "Craftlord" embarks are more 'intermediate.' I've started to rework the "Simple Start" a couple of times, but I'm having a lot of trouble doing so. I never even looked at the equipment, sorry to say. The "Simple Start" lacks an anvil! The "Craftlords" embarks lack picks!įor the "Simple Start," as I've admitted before, all I changed were skills, adding "Discipline," reducing other skills in a point neutral manner. All of them fail for one reason or another for new players. I think I can ask this with some authority, because I (mostly) wrote them. If the folks who submitted these want different titles, etc., this'd be a good time to speak up!] [Edit: Alright, it's 8:30 pm my local time, so here's what we have: Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated) A three step guide:ĭownload DF Classic or install the premium version from Steam or Itch.ioįollow the quickstart guide on the wiki, or see other learning resources (below)Īsk any questions in the ☼Dwarf Fortress Questions Thread☼ - it's always active See the reasons for our rules here, and please report any problems!ĭF can be intimidating, but we're dedicated to helping new players.
